Masterclass Topic: Blue Ocean in India’s Cross-border E-commerce
In 2017, cross-border e-commerce was a USD$500 billion market that was projected to grow to USD$1 trillion by 2021. However, globally, Small and Medium businesses were still struggling to adopt technology and convert their success in domestic markets to the international markets, resulting in their share dropping from 50% or more in domestic markets to roughly 5% in the international markets. Despite the efforts made by large behemoths like Amazon and DHL, SMEs were not benefiting from crossborder trade. They were dependent on traditional exports where their products sell for 4X or more but they collect only X.
This Masterclass explores the cross-border e-commerce needs of the Small and Medium enterprises in India using a case study of how two Indian businessmen, Shayak Mazumder and Saikat Roy, recognised a blue ocean in cross-border e-commerce that they were convinced was currently underpenetrated. Mazumder and Roy knew that Indian merchants in particular possessed relative competitive advantage in manufacturing and therefore could sell to international markets. They wanted to build a model that would help the Indian merchants to scale their businesses globally by removing their pain points and, thereby, create a template that they could scale across the globe. Participants are required to consider how Mazumder and Roy might turn a potential blue ocean into a business in order to assist Indian merchants in engaging in cross-border e-commerce.
